Rose essential oil has been used in ancient times as a healing oil and mood elevator. Because rose petals are not high in oil content, it takes a large volume of rose petals to produce only one ounce of valuable oil. Rose oil is very strong and disperses easily in both oil and water.
Not surprisingly, it is the petals which contain the most oils, although the stamens have been found to contain some as well, and these are distilled with the petals. Rose bushes grow to various heights and carry sweet, fragrant flowers which range from deep red to white and yellow. The steam-distilled oil from rose bushes has a very strong, aromatic perfume.
About 5 tonnes of roses are needed to obtain 1 kg of essential oil, which is why the cost of the oil is so high. In simpler terms, it takes 125 rose petals to produce 1 drop of rose essential oil.
